WHY - When we were fostering Fei and trying to rehome her, we were told that our chances of rehoming her were very very slim. She had all the strikes against her. She is a mongrel, black and would grow up to be a medium size dog. For those of you who don't live in Singapore. There are regulations against keeping medium size dogs in public flats here. A very high percentage of Singaporeans (around 80%) live in public flats. Mongrels, tend to grow to medium or large sizes; are hardly ever kept by people living in these flats because the penalties for going against the regulations are pretty severe. They get fined and their dogs would be taken away. There are some who keep their mongrels/ bigger breed dogs secretly and hope that they would never get found out or snitched on. This seems to be a big problem in Singapore. |
So while I understood why mongrels weren't that popular, the colour really baffled me.
Why Not Black?
But Black Dog Syndrome sums it up, ". ..how doomed black dogs are when they are brought to a pound because black dogs, particularly black labs or lab mixes, are euthanized at a horrifying rate at many pounds & shelters because people pass them up for lighter colored dogs."
"Black dogs are commonly the last, if at all, to be adopted. Destined for death in many shelters they are passed up for whatever the reason: Harmful Superstitions, Negative Labels, Fear, Just too ordinary and Over heat quicker in outdoor sport competitions ."
Each of these special dogs above live in happy loving homes. Some of them were once strays, abused, shelter or death row dogs while others, lucky to have never experienced such fates, went straight into loving homes with open arms. |
